"A TRAGIC EXPERIENCE" |

Rosalie went on a guided tour to the "Holy Land" (Israel). The people on the bus were all Jewish. She was the only catholic person in the group. The tour guide made special references to the "Holy Places" that would be of interest to her, i.e., Bethlehem Nazareth and other.
One of the trips was to Masada, an ancient mountaintop fortress in the Judean dessert. In their revolt against Rome the Jewish Zealots seized the fortress, and held it for two years. However, the Zealots were overcome by the Roman soldiers. To escape capture, all but two women and five children committed mass suicide.
On the return trip, shots were fired at the bus, all passengers knelt on the floor and hoped no one was hit. The bus driver leaned down, away from the window and continued through the area. The attackers aim for the driver. In so doing, the bus would go out of control and the passengers would be harmed or killed. These attacks were encouraged by the anti-Jewish groups. Once in safe territory, people checked to see if anyone was hurt. One man was slumped on his wife's shoulder. In checking his pulse it was hardly palpable, his wife feared he was dead.
Looking out the window, there were two armored tankers escorting the bus, one in the front, the other in the rear. The bus driver stopped at the nearest hospital. The injured man was rushed to the Emergency Room. It was later learned that he was dead on arrival to the hospital. He wanted to visit his homeland before he left this world. Fortunately, he was able to see part of Israel.
At the Hotel an Israel Representative from the Tourist Bureau apologized for the unfortunate and usual experience. He gave each one a small oil lamp.
At the University (N.Y.) Rosalie's peers had read about the tragic incident. They knew she was in Israel and wondered about her safety. When she saw them they asked, "Were you on that bus?" Need I answer that question??? She assured them that all was well, and grateful that she was protected by her "Guardian Angel."
